Job Summary

The storage software organization is a well-resourced internal “startup” within TAEC.  Our business plans aren’t public yet.

The Director, Storage Solutions Product Marketing will be responsible for the overall Product Marketing of Toshiba’s new line of storage software products.  This person will build and own the product launch process for a complex, partnership-driven new business, and will have ongoing responsibility for business operations and inbound marketing functions. In collaboration with other team members, this person will make important contributions to the strategic roadmap.

Responsibilities and Duties


  • Define/maintain market segmentation for Storage SW products focused toward driving increased value from Toshiba SSD’s in the datacenter.

  • Define market messaging & drive awareness of Toshiba software and solutions directly to data center end users, as well as hardware platform partners via product promotion, conferences, print/social media, etc.  Find and leverage opportunities for synergy with SSD marketing & promotion.

  • Develop licensing and pricing strategies and drive implementation of licensing logistics and revenue realization/recognition processes.

  • Drive creation of product documentation & support info (written & web) and sales collateral targeted at both end users and partners.

  • Manage business planning activities, including revenue and investment analysis and customer specific contracts.

  • Collaborate with Technical Marketing and Business Development team members to identify & prioritize market requirements.

  • Coordinate the group’s marketing activity with the SSD Marketing teams in US & Japan, as well as engineering, business intelligence, finance, and legal.


Qualifications and Skills

Product Line Management skills: You must be an absolute master at guiding complex, fast moving IT infrastructure or closely related products from the whiteboard to launch and beyond.

 Technical education (or a very quick study):

A degree or two in computer engineering or a related field are the usual path. It would be surprising, but not impossible for a person lacking them to succeed here. What you absolutely do need is a conceptual understanding of computer and storage architecture, and the ability to efficiently find and extract the information required to fill gaps and add to that understanding over time. You should already have an intuitive grasp of things like;

  • General computer & network architecture
  • What virtualization is all about
  • Major I/O channels & network protocols
  • How cloud computing differs from classical enterprise

 Understand storage: Broad working knowledge of the major storage technologies and markets, including technical strengths and weaknesses, leading providers, the segments they serve, and their market dynamics, including:

  • Classical enterprise vs. cloud
  • Hard disk vs. SSD
  • File, object, block, …
  • Hyperconverged vs. disaggregated
  • Major open source initiatives

Communications skills: Of course you speak, read, and write the Queen’s English with flair.  We also really value empathy; the knack for anticipating your listener’s point of view, and adjusting content and style accordingly. You should be comfortable and effective presenting to both business-oriented and technical listeners.

Business accounting principles:  You should be able to read & interpret the three basic financial statements, and be able to create a simple financial model for a new product line.

Team Building: Demonstrated ability to attract and retain great people, and build and lead a smoothly functioning group.

Desirable: In-depth of understanding of SSD’s

Product Line Management: 8+ years in product/marketing management of datacenter infrastructure products, culminating in responsibility for a product line with a significant market footprint.  Storage software preferred but not required.

    Patient and level-headed in multi-cultural environment, and able to reach across cultures, functional groups, and geographies to get things done.

  • A planner – quickly develop a plan, track others to completion.  Set measurable, aggressive goals and run post-mortems and self-scoring inherently.
    Excellent communicator and listener – in customer and internal communications, both up and down the organization.

  • Self-aware – capable of giving thoughtful feedback and open to receiving it.  Eager to improve.
